Among the reasons not to include “Fear of drawing blood” and highlights reasons for donating advertising. Discussion: Teachers are important actors in the process of promoting donation in the student population.
- PublicaciónAcceso abiertoDisagreement between PCR and serological diagnosis of Trypanosoma cruzi infection in blood donors from a Colombian endemic region(2021-05-03) Torcoroma-García, Liliana; Rocío Aguilar, Jhancy; Bueno, Marly Yojhana; Moreno, Erika Marcela; Ramírez, Herminia; Daza, Nelson; CliniUDESIntroduction:Chagas’ disease is the leading cause of infectious myocarditis worldwide. This infection caused by Trypanosoma cruzi is usually life-long and asymptomatic; however, the third part of infected people can develop severe or even fatal cardiomyopathy. As the parasitemia in the chronic phase is both low-grade and intermittent, T. cruzi infection is principally detected by serology, although this method has sensitivity and specificity limitations. Objective: To determine the level of agreement between serologicand molecular tests in 658 voluntary blood donors from six provinces in the Colombian department of Santander. Materials and methods: We evaluated an array of diagnostic technologies by cross-section sampling performing a serological double diagnostic test for T. cruzi antibody detection (Chagas III ELISA™, BiosChile Group, and ARCHITECT Chagas CMIA™, Abbott) , and DNA detection by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). We collected the demographic, clinical, and epidemiological information of participants. The sample size was calculated using Epidat™ and the statistical analysis was done with Stata 12.1™. Results: PCR was six times more sensitive in detecting T. cruzi infection than ELISA/CMIA with prevalence values of 1.8% (12/658) and 0.3% (2/658), respectively, and kappa=0.28 (95%CI: -0.03 - 0.59). In contrast, serology showed a sensitivity of 16.7% (95%CI: 2.09 - 48.4) and a specificity of 100% (95%CI: 99.4 - 100). All seropositive samples were found to be positive by PCR. Conclusions: The implementation of PCR as a complementary method for screening donors could reduce the probability of false negative and the consequent risk of transfusional-transmission of Chagas’ disease, especially in endemic regions.
- PublicaciónRestringidoSeroprevalencia de Toxoplasma Gondii en donantes del Banco de sangre de la E.S.E HOSPITAL UNIVERSITARIO ERAZMO MEOZ, CUCUTA, COLOMBIA, año 2016.(Cúcuta: Universidad de Santander, 2017, 2017-06-20) Rangel Arias, Diana Marcela; Ramírez Quijano, Angelíca María; Contreras Rangel, Jael.Toxoplasmosis, a zoonosis considered endemic throughout the world due to its wide geographic distribution; Affects humans from asymptomatic to severe disease and death according to the individual's immunity. It is produced by Toxoplasma gondii, an obligate intracellular protozoal whose transmission mechanisms include classic pathways such as the intake of raw, poorly cooked, water or food contaminated with the parasite and transplacental transmission. It also includes alternate pathways such as organ transplantation and blood transfusion; A transcendental fact when it is considered that the spread of infectious agents and their impact on the public health of populations reaches a high point when there is a feasibility that donors of blood with asymptomatic infection can contribute to the dissemination of these entities in the population. In toxoplasmosis, more than 80% of infected patients can not present clinical manifestations and in Colombia, the mandatory tests in Blood Banks do not include any screening for this agent. The knowledge of epidemiological measures such as the prevalence and the incidence of events of interest within a specific population, allows to select better intervention measures and to monitor their effectiveness in a contextualized way.
There are multiple transmission mechanisms including blood transfusions, but little is known about the frequency of T. gondii infection in Colombia’s blood banks. Objective: To determine the prevalence of T. gondii infection in blood donors of a blood bank in the city of Cúcuta by serological and molecular diagnostic techniques.Materials and methods: We identified IgG and IgM antibodies against T. gondii by immunoassay in serum from 348 donors. The frequency of T. gondii DNA was determined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in whole blood from seropositive donors and relevant variables were analyzed based on the information obtained from surveys during blood donor selection. Results: Out of the 348 enrolled donors, 134 (38.5%) showed IgG antibodies against T. gondii; two of them (0.6%) had both IgG and IgM, and in two of them (1.5%), parasite DNA was detected in blood samples. A bivariate analysis indicated an association between seropositivity to T. gondii and being over 26 years of age (p=0.020).Conclusions: The prevalence of T. gondii infection found in the blood donors of this study suggests a significant exposure to the infectious agent that becomes relevant when parasitemia is detected
