    Energy efficiency is key for productivity and competitiveness of small and medium enterprises (SMEs ) in Santander, Colombia . Different companies type, for its cultural and economic conditions, do not have expert advice to enable them to establish the action plans to improve this variable in their production processes. Although ISO 50001 becomes an option to improve energy performance, the likelihood is quite low that this type of company decide to apply this standard. Therefore it is necessary to strengthen an existing process within SMEs that incorporates the energy variable.The maintenance process has the highest affinity and interaction with the energy concept, especially in SMEs where machinery and equipment that consume energy throughout their life cycle are the responsibility of management and maintenance department.The present research work is focused on the characterization of the maintenance processes eight SMEs, designing a maintenance management model that is applied after the implementation of a master plan maintenance and evaluating their impact by reducing energy and water consumption, and reduction of greenhouse gases.
