- PublicaciónAcceso abiertoThe goal of blood pressure in the hypertensive patient with diabetes is defined : Now the challenge is go from recommendations to practice(2014-03-04) Lopez-Jaramillo, Patricio; López López, Jose; López López, Cristina; Rodríguez Alvarez, Miguel IThe recent Latin American and European guidelines published this year has proposed as a goal for blood pressure control in patients with diabetes type 2 a value similar or inferior to 140/90 mmHg. High blood pressure is the leading cause of cardiovascular diseases and deaths globally. Although once hypertension is detected, 80% of individuals are on a pharmacologic therapy only a minority is controlled. Diabetes also is a risk factor for other serious chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease. Whether specifically targeting lower fasting glucose levels can reduce cardiovascular outcomes remains unknown. Hypertension is present in 20% to 60% of patients with type 2 diabetes, depending on age, ethnicity, obesity, and the presence of micro or macro albuminuria. High blood pressure substantially increases the risk of both macro and micro vascular complications, doubling the risk of all-cause mortality and stroke, tripling the risk of coronary heart disease and significantly hastening the progression of diabetic nephropathy, retinopathy, and neuropathy. Thus, blood pressure lowering is a major priority in preventing cardiovascular and renal events in patients with diabetes and hypertension. During many years the BP goals recommended in patients with diabetes were more aggressive than in patients without diabetes. As reviewed in this article many clinical trials have demonstrated not only the lack of benefits of lowering the BP below 130/80 mmHg, but also the J-shaped relationship in DM patients. Overall we discuss the importance of define the group of patients in whom significant BP reduction could be particularly dangerous and, on the other hand, those with a high risk of stroke who could benefit most from an intensive hypotensive therapy. In any case, the big challenge now is avoid the therapeutic inertia (leaving diabetic patients with BP values of 140/90 mmHg or higher) at all costs, as this would lead to an unacceptable toll in terms of human lives, suffering, and socioeconomic costs.
- PublicaciónAcceso abiertoFeature extraction for nonintrusive load monitoring based on S-Transform(2014-05-01) Jiménez, Yulieth; Duarte, Cesar A.; Petit, Johann; Carrillo Caicedo, GilbertoThe electric energy demand is dramatically growing worldwide and demand reduction emerges as an outstanding strategy; it implies detailed information about the electricity consumption, namely load disaggregation. Typical automatic methods for load disaggregation require high hardware efforts to install one sensor per appliance, whereas Non-intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM) systems diminish the hardware efforts through signal processing and mathematical modeling. One approach to NILM systems is to model the load signatures via artificial intelligence. This paper proposes to employ S-Transform for the feature extraction stage and Support Vector Machines for the pattern recognition problem. Several experiments are presented and the results of the feature extraction with S-Transform and Wavelet Packet Transform are compared. Thus promising feature vectors based on S-Transform are presented with similar or superior performance than the approach based on Wavelet Packet Transform.
- PublicaciónAcceso abiertoDesign and development of transcutaneous electrical stimulation equipment for neuromuscular rehabilitation in individuals with facial palsy(2014-07-30) Quintero, Jorge Eduardo; Manotas, Gioanny Francisco; Galeano, Yuber Alejandro; Tellez, Diego MauricioPeripheral facial palsy is a relatively common pathology that is usually unilateral. Multiple causes generate it, producing aesthetic and functional deformity, as well as emotional, social, and professional alterations. We developed electronic equipment for transcutaneous electric stimulation, which will be applied in neuromuscular rehabilitation treatments of individuals who have suffered peripheral facial palsy. Electrotherapeutic energy is generated through current sources, whose waveforms consist of rectangular biphasic pulses, which can be adjusted in their duration or width, frequency, and intensity. For patient electrical safety, the equipment is powered with batteries. The waveforms generated and the therapeutic parameters are controlled through a microcontroller. What differentiates this equipment from the few found in the market, for this rather specific application, is that it was designed with four independent channels for passive therapy, which permits stimulating more than one neuromuscular package at the same time, and also has one channel for active therapy, which is dynamically applied by the therapist by moving the active electrode over the surface of the face.
- PublicaciónAcceso abiertoDiseño y fabricación de ladrillo reutilizando materiales a base de PET(2014-12) Martínez Amaríz, Alejandro David; Cote Jiménez, Mónica LilianaIndustrial processes are usually the major contaminants of the planet either by gas emissions produced during their processes or by the waste they generate. One of the most pollut-ing industries is brick production since it uses a lot of coal and supplies such as tires to generate energy. In this paper, the design and construction of a cement and PET-flake (Polietiline terephtha-late) brick is expounded. For this purpose, vari-ous compositions were studied through different resistance and compression tests using a PCE-MTS500 tensile testing machine. The results show a resistant product comparable to the commercial one -according to the Colombian Technical Stand-ard NTC 673, regarding compression resistance tests for normal concrete cylinders-; this standard sample presented an optimal compressive stress of 5600 kgf, whereas commercial bricks have a max-imum stress of only 4480 kgf. Comparative costs were also analyzed to those of the current market, offering an excellent cost benefit option as well.
- PublicaciónAcceso abiertoAnálisis del desarrollo de los Parques Científicos - Tecnológicos (PCTS) en Colombia(2015-01-15) Angulo Cuentas, Gerardo; Camacho Pico, Jaime; Romero Riaño, EfrénScience Technology Parks (STP), or Technology Parks (TPs), have been studied mainly in developed countries contexts. Responding to this knowledge gap, this article presents a characterization of TPs initiatives development process in Colombia through a multiple case study of parks recognized by the TPs national policy, and a comparative analysis development of them, from the point of view of five models identified in TPs literature. Typically, a TP must take on average, ten years to reach its third phase of development or maturity phase. In Colombia, the development of TPs, there are not the typical behavior because after twelve years of support provided by the Colombian state for these projects, with the enactment of TPs National Policy, three parks keep in incubation stage, as projects; the leading institution until 2012, Antioquia Technology Park announced its liquidation; and Guatiguará Technology Park although of advances in its development process, keeps in the incubation stage. Research results include identification of differentiating variables in the development of the two most developed TPs initiatives in Colombia and one analysis of future prospects of research fields.

- PublicaciónAcceso abiertoQuantitative phase analysis from powder diffraction using de Rietveld method in hydrogen storage alloys based on TiCr(2016-07-31) Martínez Amaríz, Alejandro David; Bellon Monsalve, Daniela; Reina Villamizar, LuisHydrogen storage is one of the important steps in the implementation of the hydrogen economy; metal hydrides are a promising way to achieve this goal. We present in this work the use of Rietveld analysis to characterize structurally TiCr-based alloys that are able to store hydrogen. TiCr1.1V0.9, TiCr1.1V0.45Nb0.45, TiCr1.1V0.2 Nb0.8, TiCr1.1Nb0.9 alloys were synthesized in an arc furnace under argon atmosphere. The analysis of phases was developed by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) for further refinement of both the two lattice parameters and the percentage of the phases. Our results confirmed that a structure bcc, mostly combined with a small percentage of Laves phases, leads to obtain important properties in this area. Rietveld analysis was performed by the Fullprof program and this program allows us to obtain the different structural parameters.
- PublicaciónAcceso abiertoNonintrusive power estimation of residential appliances under voltage variation(2016-10) Jiménez, Yulieth; Cortes, Jose D.; Duarte, Cesar A.; Petit, Johann F.; Carrillo, GilbertoNonintrusive Load Monitoring (NILM) systems aim to estimate the individual appliance operation and consumption in a household from measurements at a single point, in order to motivate energy conservation behaviors. Power estimation based on appliance rated powers is not always accurate because of the voltage supply variations, thus misleading load disaggregation algorithms. In this paper we propose models of power as a function of voltage for correcting the power estimation. Measurements in the laboratory of residential loads are performed under multiple voltage levels. These data are processed to find regression models. Moreover, some analytic expressions to calculate the powers are proposed. Proposed models result more accurate than the rated powers and other models in the scientific literature.
